She was just a baby during the infamous Tienanmen Square Incident of June 4, 1989, but her family was far enough south that they were not directly involved with the incident. Her parents couldn't have been more proud to have a daughter born on the third day of the third month. The only thing that could have made it better is if Mingmei had been born a year previous, during the year of the dragon. However, they were content with having a daughter born into the year of the snake. It fit with her name, which means "intelligent", and it was partially why she was given that name. Those born under the year of the snake are often considered intelligent. She was the third child of her family. She has one older brother and one older sister, all born within a few years of each other. Her eldest brother, Anguo, was born two years previous to her under the year of the rabbit. Her older sister, XiaoXing, was born during the year of the tiger. Mingmei was lucky to have been born, and her parents lived far enough from Beijing that they were able to keep their three children. It was, also, mostly because the two youngest were girls. Her brother Anguo would inherit everything from the family automatically. It wasn't much, but it was a decent sized home with a decent fortune to accompany it. Her parents weren't ridiculously wealthy, but Shenzhen was a growing city and the economy was improving constantly. As a child, she was an ambitious girl. Even though girls in China were mostly expected to work with the family or to only attend middle school, Mingmei always wanted to do more. She felt that because she was intelligent and a hard-worker that she should be able to explore the possibilities that her brother would usually only have. However, she kept these opinions to herself as a child. Saying something like that out loud was sure to dishonor her older brother, and would possibly get her disowned by her family. Throughout her early school years, however, she remained at the top of her class, much to the chagrin of the other students in her school. School was the one place where she was allowed to shine, where it was acceptable for a girl to be the best. Even as a child, Mingmei saw her studies as her ticket out of China. She put her head down, bid her time in school, and hoped for the moment when she'd have the chance to go overseas. As far as the rest of her personality, Mingmei was seen as a rather quiet girl. She didn't have many friends, though she did have one or two girlfriends who she was rather close to. She found it difficult, however, to befriend them too closely. They had dreams of carrying on their family names, of marrying and improving the life of their families in the traditional sense. Mingmei couldn't understand that. Perhaps it was because she was the third child, or even her sign, but she couldn't accept a fate that simply said she had to marry and have children. There was more to her life than that and, in many ways, she felt sorry for her older brother Anguo because he was tied directly to his fate. Anguo attended school up until high school, when he was forced to move back home and help his parents with the local business that his father had started. It was a simple shop, mostly selling random goods but occasionally selling hand-crafted goods that XiaoXing and Mingmei were responsible for creating during their free time. Xiaoxing only received schooling up until middle school. However, Mingmei showed an aptitude for education and a strong interest in pursuing education elsewhere. Her quiet demeanor, coupled with her intelligence led her parents to believe that perhaps she had the ability to leave their life in China. So they put their funding towards Mingmei's education, paying for her to attend a full high school, and helping her to start her university education. She was more than grateful for the sacrifices that her parents and her siblings made for her. She knew that it was Anguo's duty to take over the family business, but XiaoXing could have easily gone to university in her stead. She was lucky, and her sister fully supported Mingmei in her ventures into higher education. She showed an excellent aptitude for English and for music, falling in love instantly with the classics. She enjoyed history, as well, and had a keen interest of studying more about the history of her people. This was a career that her parents supported, one that was acceptable for a girl from their family, and they allowed Mingmei to continue her studies into university. She applied for many universities in China, including in the north in Beijing, but she was overly thrilled to be accepted into a university in Hong Kong. She was going to study business in the Western world, and sought to bring the two worlds together. Hong Kong was the place where East met West, after all. So she left mainland China when she was twenty and ventured to Hong Kong, where her family did not yet have permission to travel. Though they were just an hour or so apart, to Mingmei, they were worlds apart where she was. She knew that she needed to make her family proud, to honor the sacrifices of her siblings and the honor of her family. Mingmei began to dream big, and she wrote to the head of the university in Hong Kong, requesting for an opportunity to study overseas in the United States of America. She didn't think she'd be the one chosen for the exchange program; however, she was more than thrilled when she received the opportunity to go. Her scores on her exams, as well as her determination, seemed to be finally paying off. She graciously accepted the aide and the invitation to study at Las Vegas' University (UNLV). Mingmei returned home to Shenzhen to say goodbye to her family, and was wished well by all of them. This was how, during her second year of university, Mingmei traveled to the United States of America. She was awestruck by what was in front of her from the moment she landed on American soil. The freedom that the people exhibited, the opportunities that the country presented, even the food was absolutely wonderful. Everything seemed like her dream had come true. She'd been in Las Vegas for about a week or so when she first noticed something was off, however. She began to hear the sound of something else inside of her head, something that she had no control over. At first, Mingmei panicked, wondering if her decision to come to America had brought about something evil inside of her. The voice was that of a young man, and that startled her more than anything. This man didn't seem to be very ordinary, however. He often mentioned very strange things in her head, such as flying, space travel, and monkeys, of all things. As Mingmei began to speak to him more, it seemed like he really was very easy-going, but very determined at the same time. Whatever challenge had come his way, he met with open arms and excitement. For this, she was grateful for this man. Coming to a new country was scary enough, but the voice seemed to comfort her more than she'd be willing to admit. Alter: (Give us a quick background of the Alter and their source in two paragraphs. How does the Alter feel about the situation? Are the character and Alter in conflict with each other? If your Alter does not have a canonical history, tell us what history you’ve created for them. Wow us with a deep understanding of the source and their world.) What's there to say about Goku? He was sent to Earth as a baby, ordered to destroy the population so that the Saiyans could take over the planet. Baby Goku was unaware of the utter destruction of his home planet of Vegeta, however, and he was even taken in by an elderly man known as Gohan. He was the one to try to raise Goku, but at first, he was a very difficult baby, very angry and ready for destruction. Luckily, however, an accident occurred where Goku hit his head, and his personality changed completely after this. Goku slowly became known as a hero among the people. He, as a young child, successfully destroyed the evil Red Ribbon army created by one Dr. Gero. Wanting revenge, however, Dr. Gero over time built powerful androids to match Goku's power, and he became determined to destroy Goku for revenge. Goku remained unaware of this for a long while, however. He married Chi-Chi, and remained close friends with Bulma, Krillan, and the others whom he had met along the way. He eventually even had a son, Gohan. His life continued rather peacefully until a Saiyan, announcing himself as Goku's brother Radditz, tried to insist that Goku join him in destroying Earth. Goku would have none of it, however, and even sacrificed himself to defeat Radditz. He was brought back to life by the dragonballs a year later as Vegeta and Nappa, two other Saiyans, came to Earth to destroy everyone in revenge of Radditz's death. Goku and his friends fought together to destroy them, though a common enemy in Freiza brought Vegeta and Piccolo together with the Z fighters. And, after Freiza, the androids created by Dr. Gero took full force, eventually claiming Goku's life, though Gohan was victorious against the android Cell. Goku thinks that Mingmei's a pretty strong girl. He knows it's not easy to be away from one's family. He also knows that she's worried constantly about her family, especially being so far away. He does think she's pretty smart, but just about anyone who's gone to advanced school is smart by Goku's standards (who has never formally been to school, except for a failed attempt to go to driving school upon Chi-Chi's orders). He does try to take it easy now that he knows Mingmei's in his head, however, as he knows he doesn't want to hurt her. Key/Journal Mingmei's key looks like a small pen, and her journal is a regular, black notebook. Storylines; (Three storylines that can be filled by other characters in play. These can be open storylines for characters or for Alters. For example, your character can have a storyline for their biological sister or for their Alter’s spouse. Must be open upon character’s introduction into the game, not pre-filled!) Open: Chi-Chi, Gohan....any of the other Z Fighters would be amazing for Goku. He's really easy going and makes friends naturally, but he wouldn't mind having some of his old friends around too! (Yes, Goku says even Vegeta is okay by his standards :D) Open: Mingmei's and XiaoXing's brother (Anguo) would be an awesome addition. Her sister Open: Coworkers or friends for Mingmei! Other UNLV students would be a plus! | ||||||||||
